For this hop we get to showcase a book from a debut author. I chose Alienated by Melissa Landers. Check out this cover. Isin't it gorgeous? I normally don’t read science fiction but I was looking for a debut author to showcase on my blog and I found Alienated. The cover is striking and the description was interesting so I decided to give it a shot.
The story centers on Cara (a human teenage girl) and Aelyx (an alien from the L’eihr planet) and it’s told from of their point of view. The L’eihr are a highly advanced race and two years ago they made contact with earth. As part of the negotiations to build an Earth / L’eihr alliance, an exchange program is create and three alien teenagers come to live on earth. Cara is selected to host Aelyx and neither is happy about the situation. From the beginning, it is clear how completely opposite they are. Cara is passionate, outspoken and colorful and Aelyx is cold, secretive and condescending.
I really enjoyed this book. It was very well written and the world building and character development was solid. I liked how the author told the story from both POVs to give insight into both worlds and why Cara and Aelyx reacted the way they did to each other and to the growing tension around them. I like that it wasn’t a smooth transition for Aelyx into human life and it was sweet when Cara tried to find him things he could eat. I also liked that there was no insta-love. The progression of Cara’s and Aelyx’s relationship was slow and natural within the context of the story. And the first kiss scene between Cara and Aelyx was amazing. The escalating social unrest is handled well as a backdrop to their unlikely romance.
Overall, an exceptional debut novel and I look forward to reading Invaded when it is released.
