People have asked me if being an author takes away the magic of reading. When you know all the work and behind the scenes of writing a story, do you look at a story with a more analytical or critical eye? I guess to some point I do notice certain things in the author's style and I appreciate the development of a good character. But lose the magic? Never. A well-crafted story sucks you in and makes you forget about the author and the mechanics of the writing. A strongly developed hero can steal your heart and make you forget for a short time that he only exists on the pages of a book. If a book makes me feel emotions strongly enough to laugh or cry or yell at the characters, then that is pretty magical to me.
