Charlie a grandi avec deux vérités indéniables : la durée de vie de la Terre arrive à son terme, et ceux qui détiennent le pouvoir n’ont aucune intention de la sauver. Une découverte scientifique a révélé l’existence d’une planète lointaine, semblable à la nôtre, et désormais tous les gouvernements se lancent dans une course pour l’avenir de l’humanité. C’est à qui l’atteindra en premier.
Les parents de Charlie, chercheurs de génie, travaillent sans relâche sur le vaisseau-colonie américain. En leur absence, la jeune femme est devenue forte, indépendante, et a appris à ne compter que sur elle-même (et sur son unique amie, qui vit de l’autre côté de l’océan).
Mais lorsqu’elle tombe par hasard sur un secret qu’elle n’aurait jamais dû découvrir, elle met au jour une vérité qui pourrait tout bouleverser.
